About The Project
This was my first major production design for Southwestern University. I worked with Professor John Ore on the design of this show. This play was my first realism design which was hard for me because the plays I have worked on were more experimental in design.
Twelve Angry Jurors takes place in a jury room in the middle of August. The script we used was a three act adaptation of the movie. There were two elements that the designer and I focused on which was the replication of office interior lighting and the sunset outside the window with minimal space reserved for lighting a painted scenic drop.
After some discussion our main color choice was to go with a 1/8 plus green and lavender light. The reason I believe this was successful was because the halogen lamp produces a warm yellow light that shifts amber when dimmed. We had to find a color that would read as hot, but not hurt the cool colors of the set or the warm colors of the costumes. The green and lavender worked with the low hanging ceiling light and the bay windows to give a sense of heat without moving to a distinguishable color until the sunset.
There were many difficulties with this production that we had to contend with. One of the major problems that we had at the very beginning was lighting the backdrop. We had two mini strip lights, one pointed at the painted cyc and one pushing color through the central window. Along with that the side windows hid a ETC Source Four 90 degree.
Working alongside John Ore has taught me how to work with a bigger crew and a bigger design team. I also got to learn how to communicate my design opinions in a constructive manner while still taking the designer's considerations first. I am most proud of our work to come together and communicate as designers.
